Yoshitomo Nara pop culture artist

Yoshitomo Nara 奈良 美智, is a 51 year old Japanese artist from Aomori prefecture who creates very simple childlike drawings/paintings of mostly little girls and animals. Nara lives in Tokyo but has had his artwork exhibited worldwide.




Nara first became visible during Japan’s Pop art movement in the 1990s and he has gained him a cult following around the world. His artwork has been featured in the album titled ‘Suspended Animation’ by experimental band Fantômas (Made up of Mike Patton, Buzz Osbourne, Trevor Dunn and Dave Lombardo) and also the cover art for Japanese all girl punk band Shonen Knife.

His drawings are more Western like, less Japanese compared with all the anime and manga we are familiar with
