Kaiten Sushi 回転寿司, (also called kuru kuru sushi くるくる寿司,, “yasu-zushi” or sushi train)  is a type of lower end fast food Japanese sushi restaurant popular with families where the plates with sushi (or other food and drinks) are placed on a rotating conveyor belt that winds through the restaurant and moves past every table and counter seat.  Patrons simply pick their selections from a steady stream of fresh sushi moving along the conveyor belt and the final bill is based on the number and type of color coded plates of the consumed sushi.

If customers cannot find their desired sushi, they can make special orders by simply telling the attendants. Condiments and tools are usually found near the seats along with self served tea.

Conveyor belt sushi was invented by Yoshiaki Shiraishi in 1958  when had problems staffing his small sushi restaurant and had difficulties managing the restaurant by himself. He got the idea of a conveyor belt sushi after watching beer bottles on a conveyor belt in an Asahi brewery.

Instead of seeing the sushi going around on the conveyor belt, we found some videos from people who placed their video cameras on the conveyor belt going around.
