Japanese edo period monsters

Living in Japan, you’ll hear folks talk about Yokai 妖怪, a term used to encompass virtually all monsters and supernatural beings. These range from from the evil oni (ogre) to the mischievous kitsune (fox) or snow woman Yuki-onna. Yokai can possess both animal and part human features (e.g. Kappa and Tengu) and those that have the ability to shape-shift are called obake お化け.
