Doraemon ドラえもん is a very popular comic/cartoon series which started in 1969. All Japanese children know and love Doraemon. Created by Fujiko F. Fujio the series is about a robotic cat named Doraemon, who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid 4th grade schoolboy, Nobita Nobi. Doraemon is famous worldwide as there is even a Time Magazine article about him, read here.
The story is of the series is as follows:

Doraemon is sent back in time by Nobita Nobi’s great-great grandson Sewashi to improve Nobita’s current circumstances in order for Nobita’s descendants to have a better future. Based on Nobita’s failures in school and subsequently, his career, his descendants are beset with financial problems. The stories are focused on the everyday struggles of fourth grader Nobita. Doraemon possesses a fourth-dimensional pocket from which he can produce all manner of futuristic tools, gadgets, and playthings from a future department store to help fix or solve problems.
