Finding the perfect match in Japan like anywhere else in the world can be tricky.  However, dating in Japan can be a little bit easier through GOKON 合コン  which is a popular popular way (almost a rite of passage) to meet new people.  Gokon is typically a group blind date over drinks and food for men and women  their 20s and 30s.

Generally, a single man and woman who know each other organize the gokon in advance, each agreeing to bring 3 or 4 single eligible friends from work, college etc.   The organizers are called Kanji which means hosts. The male Kanji reserves a restaurant, mostly an Izakaya-type dining place. Normally Gokon are not primarily intended to result in one-night stands but rather for making friends and possibly forming long-term relationships.

Typically groups of men and women will sit opposite each other and converse with one another, while simultaneously whispering discussions with their same-sex peers about which potential partners they find attractive.  Many times fun drinking games are played to reduce tension and encourage a more releaxed atmosphere.

Gokon members are normally selected from certain groups  such as doctor Gokon, businessman Gokon, model Gokon  etc and there are area also different Gokon events such as Lunch Gokon, Golf Gokon, Karaoke Gokon etc.  So as a gaijin living in Japan,  if you are invited to a Gokon, you should attend for the uniquely Japanese experience and who knows, you might even find that special someone.
