The Crimson Kimono was a 1959 film noir directed by Samuel Fuller and starred James Shigeta, Glenn Corbett and Victoria Shaw. It featured several ahead-of-its-time ideas about race and society’s perception of race, a thematic and stylistic trademark of Fuller.

Linda Linda Linda is a great Japanese movie. The 2005 production is about 4 Japanese high school girls in rural Japan who form a band  so they can perform at the upcoming  school festival. The film was directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita and stars Aki Maeda, Yu Kashii, and Shiori Sekine as the band members, and Bae Doona as a South Korean foreign exchange student.

Musically, the film is an homage to the power of music and the legendary bands of yesteryear. The film takes its title from the song that the girls learn to play, “Linda Linda Linda リンダ リンダ リンダ” by legendary Japanese punk band, the Blue Hearts ザ・ブルーハーツ, .  The girls’ band is called Paran Maum (Korean for “The Blue Hearts”).

Writer and director Noboru Iguchi has had some gore classics including The Machine Girl and Robo Geisha.  If you liked this type of entertaiment then watch  his new (toned down) TV series The Ancient Dogoo Girl 古代少女ドグちゃん (Kodai Shoujo Dogu-chan) which started in October last year and which airs  on MBS every Wednesday late night.

The show stars the lovely 18 year old idol Erika Yazawa 谷澤恵里香 (of Jpop group Idoling) and is directed by Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on) and Ryuta Miyake (Ju-on: Shiroi Rojo) while visual effects master Tsuyoshi Kazuno (Robo Geishia) handles the visuals.

The story follows a ten thousand year old girl who is resurrected and bound to a hikimori ひきこもり (a socially withdrawn teenager) named Makoto (played by actor Kubota Masataka).Together with the aide of a small ancient creature called the Dogū (small clay figurine)  from which she draws her power, the busty heroine fights off all the aliens and bad guys.

Elite Yankee Saburo エリートヤンキー三郎 is an 11 episode TV drama (and movie) based on a comedy manga by Shuji Abe about an awkward and nerdy boy who enters high school. He is unfortunately saddled with the legacy of his two older brothers, who were well known delinquents, and consequently is misunderstood and labeled as an “elite yankee.” The late night TV drama was shown on TV Tokyo in 2007 and the 2008 movie was directed by Yudai Yamaguchi.

Elite Yankee Saburo the movie contained the original cast including including lead actor Hideo Ishiguro, Hitoshi and Kazuyoshi Ozawa with Riki Takeuchi making a guest appearance. For the movie, the producers also made some sexy teasers featuring Japanese gravure idols

Earlier this  summer, there was one anime movie that was released we highly recommend to all otaku.   Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai (宮本武蔵-双剣に馳せる夢-) was released 13th May 2009.  Scripted by Mamoru Oshii the man who made  anime like Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor and Sky Crawlers, it gained much attention in both Japan and also overseas and the anime was shown at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in Korea and the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.

The film was directed by Mizuho Nishkubo and the excellent animation was produced by Production I.G. which also did many anime films like Ghost in the Shell movies, the Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex TV series, and Blood+.

Art-School are a talented 4 piece J-rock/Jpop band formed in 2002 and comprising of  Riki Kinoshita  (Vocal/Guitar) Hiroyuki Suzuki (Drums),  Todaka  Masafumi  (Guitar) and Takeshi Uno (Bass).

The band’s first mini-album was SONIC DEAD KIDS and they played at the 2002 Fuji Rock Festival. The same year they also got a contract with Toshiba-Emi and released the single Diva.  Follow up albums full of jangly guitars, indie pop and punk anthems include Flora, Missing, Paradise Lost, Requiem for Innocence and Love/Hate.

The band’s most recent album is 14 souls and the single Lost Control was featured in cult movie Robo Geisha ロボゲイシャ (from the folks who brought you Tokyo gore police) which features sexy Aya Kiguchi and Hitomi Hasebe.

There is no way to describe the Japanese animated series Cat Shit One except wacky.  Produced by Studio Anima and directed by  Kazuya Sasahara from the original Manga (released in the USA as Apocalypse Meow) by Motofumi Kobayashi, the 12, 23 minute espisodes target  survival game and military fans and people who like reading Maritan.

Last month, Hollywood movie “G.I. Joe” hit the Japanese cinemas with much fanfare.  Part of the ongoing promotion campaign involved the sexy Japanese av and gravure idol group called the “Ebisu Muscats” from the late night TV Tokyo show Onegai Muscat (Please Muscat) wearing sexy leather outfits and carrying toy guns

Fans of the late night show were happy when in April the show got renewed for a 2nd season and is now called “Onedari!! Muscat” おねだり!!マスカット and which is still hosted by the comedy team Ogiyahagi)

For the GI Joe promotion, 13 beauties led by Sora Aoi 蒼井そら and including Akiho Yoshizawa 吉沢明歩, Sho Nishino 西野翔,  Mihiro みひろ, Risa Kasumi かすみりさ, Aika Ando 安藤あいか, Minori Hatsune 初音みのり,  Rin Sakuragi 桜木凛,  KONAN, Airi Nagasuku 永作あいり, Jessica Kizaki 希崎ジェシカ, Keara Uehara 上原カエラ  and Rio (Tina Yuzuki) formed a special unit called “B.I.
