Earlier this month, Japan held its first ever awards ceremony Seiyuu (voice actors used in anime and other media). The Seiyuu Awards were held at the Tokyo Anime Center and winners appeared on the red carpet after the show to offer thanks to their loyal otaku fans who were gathered outside the Center.
In addition to awards categories for acting roles, there were also awards for the “Special Achievement” category and a “Synergy” award, which is awarded to the best movie or series that voters felt made a strong use of voice talent.

Earlier this summer, there was one anime movie that was released we highly recommend to all otaku. Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai (宮本武蔵-双剣に馳せる夢-) was released 13th May 2009. Scripted by Mamoru Oshii the man who made anime like Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor and Sky Crawlers, it gained much attention in both Japan and also overseas and the anime was shown at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in Korea and the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.

K-ON! けいおん! pronunced “Keion” is a fun to read Japanese four-panel comic strip manga by Kakifly serialized in manga magazines Manga Time Kirara and Manga Time Kirara Carat. The anime version by Kyoto Animation began airing in Japan on TBS in March earlier this year.

The story is bout four cute Japanese school girls who join their school’s music club in order to save it from being abolished due to the lack of members. The four girls are Yui Hirasawa 平沢 唯 – the new energetic but clumsy lead guitar player, Mio Akiyama 秋山 澪 – shy, dark haired left hander who plays bass guitar, Ritsu Tainaka 田井中 律 – the club’s self proclaimed president who plays the drums and Tsumugi Kotobuki 琴吹 紬– a rich blonde (nicknamed Mugi) who cooks very well and plays the keyboard.

There is no way to describe the Japanese animated series Cat Shit One except wacky. Produced by Studio Anima and directed by Kazuya Sasahara from the original Manga (released in the USA as Apocalypse Meow) by Motofumi Kobayashi, the 12, 23 minute espisodes target survival game and military fans and people who like reading Maritan.

Ninja Hattori Kun 忍者ハットリくん is a manga series from 1964 – 1966 by Fujiko Fujio 藤子不二雄 which was later adapted into a live action TV series (1966 to 1967), TV anime series (1981-1987) anime film (1983) a NES video game (1986) and eventually a movie NIN×NIN 忍者ハットリくん THE MOVIE (2004) starring Shingo Katori 香取 慎吾, Rena Tanaka, Gori and Yuri Chinen.


The story of Hattori-kun revolves around 10-year old Ken’ichi Mitsoba who befriends a little ninja named Kanzo Hattori. Hattori becomes part of the Mitsoba family along with his brother Shinzou and his ninja dog, Shishi-Manu. Hattori helps Ken’ichi with his problems especially against Kemumaki, a Koga Ninja and his ninja cat Kagechiyo.

Anpanman is a long running and popular Japanese young children’s cartoon anime written by Takashi Yanase. The television series called Soreike! Anpanman (それいけ!アンパンマン Go! Anpanman) is produced by NTV. The anime is also popular in South Korea where the cartoon is known as “Narara Hoppangmaen” ( 날아라 호빵맨).
The series revolves around central characther Ampaman who was created when the Star of Life fell down the chimney of a bakery causing the dough in the oven to come to life. The dough becomes Anpanman, a superhero made of anpan (a sweet roll with bean jam filling). Together with his friends, Anpanman fights his rival Baikinman and helps the malnourished. This is really a great cartoon for the young children.

Doraemon ドラえもん is a very popular comic/cartoon series which started in 1969. All Japanese children know and love Doraemon. Created by Fujiko F. Fujio the series is about a robotic cat named Doraemon, who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid 4th grade schoolboy, Nobita Nobi. Doraemon is famous worldwide as there is even a Time Magazine article about him, read here.
